Varenna, situated between Mandello and Bellano, is an old town that overlooks the lake and is perfectly connected to the major places on the other side of the lake.
Varenna is situated on a hill by the Esino stream mouth and its origins may be linked to some Iron Age establishments.
In the Middle Age, Varenna took part to the conflicts between Milan and Como and in 1169 it hosted the inhabitants of Comacina island that were fleeing the raid; the episode is recalled every year with the so called “Festa di San Giovanni”, a celebration where thousands of floating candles are set free on the water of the lake.
Narrow alleys go from the church square to the lake, creating a fan shape.
Varenna is a very fascinating city and even if it has become an important touristic center, is has not forgotten its origins, linked to the fishing tradition, the fireworks production and the extraction of the characteristic black marble.
Besides being a good starting point to visit the main attractions of the central part of the lake, Varenna is close to Fiumelatte, Perledo, Vezio and Esino Lario, from where you can organize beautiful hikes and day trips on the Grigne mountains.
