Lecco is situated at the very south of the eastern branch of the lake. It is a city with almost 50.000 inhabitants, and it once inspired Alessandro Manzoni with his “Promessi Sposi”.
Today, Lecco is a province. It is placed in an almost flat area and is surrounded by mountains that look like Dolomiti: Barro mountain, San Martino, Monte Due Mani and above all the unique Resegone, with its saw tooth shape peaks. Lecco is famous for its mountains but also for the lake. The lakefront is the most charming part of the city, while the Canottieri Lecco (kayak club) has been offering, for over a century, all the infrastructures needed for water sports such as swimming, kayak, rowing. Canottieri Lecco is where many big champions in water sports grew up and developed.
The centre of Lecco is the ancient fortified town, surrounded by the harbor, Via Cavour, Via Volta and Resinelli.
Piazza XX Settembre, the old Piazza del Mercato (with its wavy arcades, dominated by the ancient Viscontea Tower, memory of the old castle of Lecco) and Piazza Cermenati (important trading centre on the water, with its church from 15th century, the Pretorio palace and the Palace of Fears – Palazzo delle Paure) are the historical heart of Lecco.
